SEO in Uncommon Industries
If you’ve been in the SEO industry for any amount of time, you know there are businesses that depend on search engine optimization for a large percentage of their marketing. I’m thinking of attorneys, plumbers, roofers, local medical professionals, etc. These industries could use traditional forms of advertising, but SEO is clearly the better choice in terms of ROI.
But what about SEO for businesses that shouldn’t, or haven’t ever, relied on SEO?
Take the Christensen brothers, for example. Their big selling point is that they have Black Angus bulls for sale in Oklahoma, but want to start venturing into online marketing to get more sales.
Yes, you read that right.
They want to grow their cattle business partly through online methods. In an industry where everybody knows everybody, and word of mouth has always been king, how would we go about putting together a strategy? Although this has been changing in recent years, the cattleman’s business has pretty much stayed offline.
The first thing we did was look for any keywords that might garner some attention. We tried a quick search for “Angus Bulls Oklahoma”, but that only rendered a volume of 10 per month. Not worth pursuing.
The “related keywords” didn’t seem to give us much help either. Maybe it is’t worth it?
We dug deeper and changed some of the keywords a bit.
That’s a bit better.
We can work with 70 searches a month, especially if they are focused, purchase-ready searches (seems kinda like they are).
We ended up with a list of terms that we could easily target:
- cow calf pairs for sale in oklahoma – 50
- replacement heifers for sale in oklahoma – 30
- oklahoma angus breeders – 20
- registered angus bulls for sale oklahoma – 10
- cattle for sale in oklahoma – 480
- black angus bulls for sale oklahoma – 40
- bred heifers for sale in oklahoma
- angus cattle oklahoma – 10
- cows for sale oklahoma – 170
- registered angus bulls for sale in oklahoma – 10
That changes things a bit. In an industry where the average domain authority is like a 4, there may be a good chance to steal some serious SERP action.
